Gas Permeable contacts – the Best Choice

For those of us who are in the "40-something" club and find that we are holding reading material at arm's length or have stashed 10 pairs of readers at home and work, there are finally some great contact lens options available.  A couple of soft contact lens companies have successful bifocal contact lenses that work for some patients.  However, more technological advancements have been made in Gas Permeable multifocal contact lenses.   Many eye care professionals agree that Gas permeable contacts are better because they are more stable and keep their shape when you blink.

Those of us over 40 are more susceptible to dry eye syndrome, and these gas permeable contact lenses a have an advantage in that they don't contain water and they don't absorb moisture from your eyes the way soft lenses do. This makes gas permeable contacts more comfortable than soft lenses.  Because of the cleaner materials of gas permeable contacts, they also resist collecting bits of protein and other debris from your tears. It's these deposits that can make soft lenses uncomfortable and scratchy, especially for dry-eye sufferers.

Rigid gas permeable lenses are firmer than soft contact lenses and therefore more durable. Unlike older versions of hard contact lenses, rigid gas permeable lenses are made with silicone polymers, which allow oxygen to circulate to the cornea of the eye, often at a higher rate than soft contact lenses. Compared to soft contact lenses, rigid gas permeable contact lenses maintain their shape and offer clearer vision for most types of corrections. They are also easy to take care of and are extremely durable. The amount of time needed to adjust to rigid gas permeable contact lenses can be longer than with soft contact lenses, but is usually a short-term issue. To achieve maximum comfort, a rigid gas permeable contact lens should be worn every day.
